Animals becoming extinct, less available clean drinking water, glaciers rapidly melting, countries becoming flooded; these and many more are all problems we are facing in our everyday lives due to global warming. â€Å"The warnings about global warming have been extremely clear for a long time. We are facing a global climate crisis. It is deepening. We are entering a period of consequences.† Said Al Gore in a speech at the National Sierra Club Convention in 2005. Many would agree with Gore in taking the side that global warming is the greatest threat to our world today. Many would agree that because of these extremely harmful effects global warming has on the earth, it is the greatest threat to our world today. Another negative effect global warming has on the earth is the spread of diseases. As countries become warmer, insects migrate north. These insects carry diseases and plagues which they bring to these northern countries, such as mosquitos carrying malaria. Malaria and other similar disease carried by migrating insects jump from one host to the next, infected a whole community within a small amount of time. With so many patients becoming infecting so quickly, public health services are becoming overwhelmed, leading to a negative impact on the economy. Similar to how global warming is affecting humans through disease, it is also affecting humans through the buildup of smog. Smog is a powerful combination of vehicle fumes, ground-level ozone, and airborne industrial pollution that represents an immediate chronic health threat to those living in revolutionized or built-up urban areas. The gothic genre is typically very dark and mysterious, and one of the ways that Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe compliment and counteract this goal in their works â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† and â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado†, respectively, is with irony. Their masterful use of irony engages the reader in the work and invites them to consider the story and the characters’ intentions. Our protagonist’s name itself is ironic, given that he is â€Å"making more haste on his present evil purpose,† (Hawthorne 4). This is verbal irony because a good man will not be seeking out a wicked deed. Goodman Brown constantly feels guilty and considers his religion as he walks towards his goal. As he reminisces about his religious education, he recognizes the minister and deacon, â€Å"jogging along quietly, as they were wont to do, when bound to some ordination or ecclesiastical council,† (Hawthorne 8). The author does not revealed to us where exactly Goodman Brown is going, but the juxtaposition of the church with thi s journey is situational irony. On any other day, seeing the minister and Deacon Gookin jog along will let an observer know that they would be headed to church. His good family background is what many people believe to bethe main reason for Einsteins intellectual gigantism. His family was not perfect, however. His family moved many times dueto his fathers failed business adventures. As a child, Einstein was slowto learn to speak; this worried his parents a great deal. These fears werediminished when his parents noticed their childs success in solving manypuzzles. He also built many things with blocks at that young age, and whenhe got older, he was building enormous mansions out of playing cards. When Einstein was asked what first impressed and stimulated his mind,he told them that his father had showed him a compass at the age of five. Young Albert was intrigued by how the needle always pointed in the samedirection, no matter how the compass was turned. Einstein later said hefelt something deeply hidden had to be behind things.When Albert was old enough, he attended an elementary school inAarau, and later moved on to a secondary school in Munich. He also did this so he could join his parents who were living in Italy atthe time. Einstein didnt attend college. Instead, he went to the SwissPolytechnic Institute in Zurich in order to study mathematics and physics. After graduation in 1900, he became an examiner at the Swiss Patent Office. This job gave Einstein a lot of free time, during which he performedscientific experiments. These experiments led to the Papers of 1905. ThePapers of 1905 were three papers written by Einstein to a German scientificperiodical called Annals of Physics. The first paper was the Quantum Theory, which was basically aboutquanta and the flow of light. This explained how intense light couldrelease electrons from metal. For this paper, Einstein received the NobelPrize in Physics in 1921. The second paper was Einsteins Special Theoryof Relativity. This is the most famous of Albert Einsteins works. Thetheory of relativity revolutionized scientific thought with new ideas oftime, space, mass, motion, and gravitation. It treated matter and energyas exchangeable, not distinct and also laid the basis of nuclear energy(E=mc). The third of these papers was about Brownian Motion. This paperconfirmed the Atomic Theory of matter. In 1915, Einstein announced thedevelopment of the General Theory of Relativity, called the Unified FieldTheory, which was based on his special theory.
